The construction of a dry port of the special Economic Zone “Khorgos – Eastern Gate” will be of a strategic importance not only for Kazakhstan but also globally.

In the “Nurli Jol” programme, the Head of State instructed to send funds for the completion of the first stage of the facility this year. At the same time, more than 10 large objects are being constructed here. These are a container terminal, water-intake facility, an electrical substation and administrative buildings.

Experts say that the importance of a dry port for Kazakhstan and other countries cannot be overestimated. It should serve not just a transit corridor between Europe and Asia, but also become one of the world’s main transport through-passage. Because shipping of goods by sea takes a lot of time, and the air freight is expensive. The dry port of the SEZ “Khorgos-Eastern gate” will be the largest in the territory of the post-soviet states. Its area will be 150 hectares. A customs clearance center, container terminal, warehouses, water intake facilities, a substation, and a fire station are being built here. Furthermore, a transport interchange is being built, which will connect the Free Economic Zone with the highway Western Europe – Western China. Also, from the station Altynkol, a railway with a wide and narrow gauge for domestic and Chinese trains was extended. Three large construction companies and dozens of subcontracting organizations are involved in the construction of the dry port. The construction involved about 600 units of custom machinery and about 2500 people. Construction of the main dry port facilities is scheduled to be completed this year. But the construction will not be finished here. Because the dry port is only a small part of the Free Economic Zone, with a total area of about 4.5 thousand hectares. Infrastructure and engineering networks are still to be constructed in the logistical and industrial zones, where plants and factories of the world’s leading companies will be situated in the future.
